HE KNOWS TOO MUCH
(Prompt: If I die young)
I’m sad that he knows too much, this eleven year-old son of mine. He was too young to understand then, and we don’t talk about it now. I see him, sitting alone on the porch step, elbows on his knees and chin in his hands. I’m sure I know what he’s thinking about, but I haven’t the strength to go to him.
After being informed that my husband was on a plane that crashed into the Twin Towers, my mother had to come take care of Matt for almost a year.
Sensing me at the door, he said, “Mom, if I die young, who will take care of you?”
I joined him on the steps. “Is that what’s been worrying you? Your Dad’s watching over us. He’ll make sure you don’t die young. When you leave home, he’ll still be watching over us.” We sat on that step for hours, finally able to talk.
